iPhone 18 Pro vs iPhone 17 Pro: What's the Difference? A $310 Gap at Launch Buys an Hour More Battery and a Low-Light Camera Edge
Same screen, same body, a year apart. GSMArena's lab tests and DXOMARK's camera scores show where the iPhone 18 Pro actually pulls ahead of the iPhone 17 Pro — and where it doesn't.

The iPhone 18 Pro launched on September 9, 2026, a year almost to the day after the iPhone 17 Pro, and on paper it looks like a modest refresh: same screen size, same body dimensions, a $100 higher price. The real differences are smaller and more specific than that "Pro" label suggests — a faster chip, a notably brighter and longer-lasting battery, and a camera upgrade that mostly shows up in low light and video rather than in daylight photos. If you already own a 17 Pro, this isn't an obvious upgrade. If you're coming from anything older, it's worth knowing exactly what that extra $100 buys.
Both phones share the same 6.3-inch LTPO Super Retina XDR OLED display at 1206×2622 pixels (about 460 ppi) with 120Hz ProMotion, HDR10 and Dolby Vision, and the same 150 x 71.9 x 8.8 mm body. GSMArena's own lab measurements put the iPhone 17 Pro's screen at 818 nits in manual mode and 1,012 nits with auto-brightness in bright light; the iPhone 18 Pro measured lower in GSMArena's test, 783 nits manual and 971 nits auto, though both are still comfortably readable outdoors and the difference is unlikely to matter in daily use. The 18 Pro is 5 grams heavier, at 211g versus 206g, which is not something you'll feel picking either phone up on its own.
The chip is where the generation gap is real. The iPhone 18 Pro runs Apple's A20 Pro, built on a 2nm process, against the iPhone 17 Pro's 3nm A19 Pro — Apple claims up to 40% faster performance, and the GPU core count goes up from 6 to 7. For most people this won't be the reason to upgrade; both chips are fast enough for anything the App Store offers today. It matters more as a hedge on how many years of iOS updates and demanding apps the phone can comfortably run.
Storage is the other place the price increase partly explains itself. Both phones start at 256GB, but the iPhone 18 Pro adds a 2TB tier that the 17 Pro never offered, on top of the existing 512GB and 1TB options. In the US, the iPhone 18 Pro starts at $1,199 for 256GB, rising to $1,399 for 512GB, $1,799 for 1TB and $2,399 for 2TB. The iPhone 17 Pro launched at $889 for 256GB — a $310 gap at the same storage tier, not just the headline "$100 more" figure Apple quotes, because that figure compares the 18 Pro's base price to the 17 Pro's price after a mid-cycle increase, not its original launch price.
Camera specs look nearly identical on the spec sheet — both phones use a 48MP main, 48MP ultra-wide and 48MP telephoto lens, with an 18MP front camera — but the main lens changed meaningfully: the iPhone 18 Pro's wide camera has a variable aperture from f/1.5 to f/4.0, while the iPhone 17 Pro's is fixed at f/1.8. DXOMARK, which tests both phones' cameras independently, scored the iPhone 18 Pro 172 overall (171 for photo, 176 for video) against 168 for the iPhone 17 Pro (166 photo, 171 video) — a modest but real improvement, concentrated in low light, where DXOMARK gave the 18 Pro the best score on its entire list, and in video, where it's the highest video score DXOMARK has recorded for any phone. If you mostly shoot in daylight, the two cameras will look very close in your photos.
Battery life is the clearest upgrade, and it comes from a bigger cell rather than only efficiency gains. The iPhone 18 Pro's battery is 4,056 mAh (4,288 mAh on the eSIM-only US model) against the iPhone 17 Pro's 3,998 mAh, and GSMArena's Active Use Score — its own standardized battery test — rates the iPhone 18 Pro at 16:43h against 15:23h for the iPhone 17 Pro, an improvement of about an hour and 20 minutes of real mixed use. Charging is faster too: GSMArena measured the 18 Pro at 42% in 15 minutes and a full charge in 1 hour 2 minutes, against 40% in 15 minutes and 1:18h to full for the 17 Pro.
One place the newer phone is a step back: speakers. GSMArena's loudness test gave the iPhone 18 Pro a "Good" rating at -26.5 LUFS, while the iPhone 17 Pro scored only "Average" at a level GSMArena describes as "a notch below the 16 Pro," attributing it to smaller drivers fitted that year. In other words, the 18 Pro's speakers are genuinely better than the 17 Pro's weaker ones, not worse than them — but the 17 Pro's dip means the gap between the two generations here is bigger than the raw numbers alone suggest.
Who should buy which. If you're on an iPhone 15 Pro or older, the iPhone 18 Pro is a clear jump in battery life and camera low-light performance, and the 2TB storage option is new if you shoot a lot of 4K video. If you already have an iPhone 17 Pro, there's no single feature here that justifies trading in a one-year-old phone — the display is marginally dimmer by GSMArena's own measurements, the camera gains are real but concentrated in low light and video, and the chip speed bump won't be visible in daily use. The strongest reason to pick the iPhone 17 Pro today is price: at $889 to the 18 Pro's $1,199 for the same 256GB tier, it's $310 cheaper for a phone that's one generation, not two, behind.
